If your basis for restricting gays from having the same rights as straights is an arbitrary religious standard then you're making a de facto establishment of religion, which is forbidden under Chapter V, Section 116. The exact same argument was made successfully here, as the religious underpinning for the Defense of Marriage Act and state level marriage laws are all based on religious belief, violating the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights of the US Constitution. I'm pretty sure if anyone in ACT has even half a brain they're hoping that your Federal government attempts to strike down their state level legislation in order to force the issue to your equivalent of the our US Supreme Court. After all, that's what multiple civil rights groups did here and you guys are so damn keen on doing what we do.
They have the same rights they can marry someone of the Opposite sex any time they want... after all that is what marriage is about.

If that's the case then explain why ACT feels the needs to legislate in marriage equality?

I would buy that except the law recognises and give extra rights to the partners in a marriage. Allow gays to marry gives each partner the same rights for example in a separation, taxation or on death. They should be afforded these rights.

Where they get married I think is an issue and it should be the right of the churches to decide if they will conduct these ceremonies depending on if they think their version of god approves it or not.

Do the words "explain why ACT feels the need to legislate in marriage equality since it DOES NOT EXIST under Australian federal law" mean anything, you hatfucking retard? At best Australia notionally allows for civil partnerships, which is not the same as a marriage under Australian law since, as SN pointed out, straight married couples receive more rights than gay couple. Where's the fucking equality in that, asshole?

For all intents and purposes they have the same legal rights.

I have no intention on trashing traditions and the real meaning of words and the accepted meaning of Marriage for a vocal and very tiny minority of a minority.

I'm sorry it isn't a matter of equality... an apple cannot be equal to an orange. Nor a golf ball to a football.
If you don't understand the political situation in the ACT or my explanation of it I suggest you do some research and you'll see I was correct.

My point is Marriage is a legal term. I am not sure if in Australia they have exactly the same rights. if they have.... then it is an issue only can they claim to be "married" vs having a legal partnership under law.

Has the term, "marriage" been updated to include civil partnerships?

Only we're not talking about comparing apples and oranges or golf balls and footballs. We're talking about human beings, you fucking idiot.

Dude, you're the one trying to suggest that gays are some how not humans. At this point I'd love to hear your retarded excuse for an explanation just for the comedy value.

Ah no I didn't Chard you are being an idiot.

I have gay friends and guess what? None of them want to get married.

SN Marriage is an eons old tradition that involves a man and a woman.... I'm not using a generic term for joining 2 things together. I'm talking about the globally accepted practice that involves a Man and a Woman.
