Australia has changed so much in regard to tolerance - and not from us. If you went to Auburn or a similar suburb and said to a Muslim that the anti-Islam clip was a joke and they should just laugh it off - you would get shot or beaten up.

The rioting overseas appears to be out of control. There is so much hatred for the US and allied nations. We should have just left the Islamic nations alone to begin with and not interferred by instigating wars - and they started a long time before 9/11. Instead of containing the violence to one area of the globe - it's spreading everywhere now.

AUSTRALIA is proudly a diverse and tolerant nation. We are one of the world's great success stories when it comes to being a rich and pluralist society where peoples from all backgrounds are united by one value above all others: respect for each other.

For this reason, the weekend's violence by Islamic extremists was disgraceful. Australia is no totalitarian regime, no Muslim's rights have been violated by our laws. If anything Australia has bestowed upon them countless more freedoms and privileges than they or their parents enjoyed in their country of origin.

And yet when a laughably low-quality video is posted on the internet by an American flake, a small group of militant thugs decide to use it as an excuse to attack their own country.

The logic is so absurd it is not worthy of newsprint to engage it. Yet the suggestion that police showed a degree of restraint on the day because of political, cultural or religious sensitivity shows how insidious this argument can be.

The truth is the people responsible for last weekend's mayhem and the obscene messages of hate are not activists or freedom fighters. They are thugs who use half-witted conspiracy theories and the hoary old chestnut of religious conviction to justify brutish and barbaric behaviour.

If anything these people are worse than common criminals. They hurt indiscriminately and betray the very people they pretend to protect.

Not only do they not represent Australia's Islamic community, they are its worst enemy. They portray Islam in the ugliest possible light and their actions defame the majority of Muslims in this country who are peace-loving and generous contributors to the community. We know this because mainstream Islamic leaders have been unequivocal in denouncing their actions. Saying they do not represent the Australian islamic Community is naive, they do. They don't represent all Muslims but they obviously represent many. Many more than is acceptable.

This dangerous minority stands condemned by Muslims and non-Muslims alike, just as violent extremism will be by those who treasure the things that make this country great. The one thing that can never be accepted by a tolerant society is intolerance.

But in the end their intolerance and hatred cannot be tolerated.
