A man who allegedly threatened to crack the neck of a Commonwealth public official has been refused bail in a Sydney court.

Milad bin Ahmad-Shah al-Ahmadzai, 23, is charged with threatening serious harm to a Commonwealth official.

He is also charged with using a carriage service to threaten to kill.

He was arrested last night when officers raided his Auburn home after he phoned the public official earlier this month.

The court heard he made threats by saying "crack your neck" and "slit your throat".

The Joint Counter Terrorism Team has been investigating Ahmadzai since December 2009 for allegedly committing terrorism related offences, court documents said.

Ahmadzai's lawyer Nick Hanna told reporters outside the court that he has been instructed to lodge an application for Supreme Court bail.

"My client's family have kindly asked that their privacy be respected," Mr Hanna said.

The matter has been adjourned until July 24 at Central Local Court.

Mr Hanna argued for bail saying Ahmadzai had strong community ties with about 100 family members in Sydney.

Mr Hanna also acknowledged that Ahmadzai was due to be sentenced on another matter (involving the ram-raid of an ATM on Sydney's upper north shore in July 2011) on Friday, had Crohn's disease and didn't pose a flight risk.

Awaiting sentence for another crime would surely make him a flight risk. Also, our system is flawed if you have to wait 2 year to be sentenced.

Why hasn't the Australian government listed Hizb ut-Tahrir as it has been in most other countries.

Why do they still allow preachers of hate to visit and preach to the Islamic Community?

The Australian government doesn't seem to care if radical groups are banned in other countries. They are still allowed to enter Australia with the intent of preaching hate. It's impossible to come up with a sane reason why.

Actually, the governments keep proving to me, they don't much at all.

Well yes it has Einstein. I am assuming the advice of ASIO and the governments of other countries who have banned these groups from entering their own countries do know more than I do, which is why they advise against allowing said people to preach hate here.
