As has been shown from Telstra’s own documentation the copper it installed is .4mm or less. To run VDSL you need wire of .6mm or larger—the larger diameter imposing less impedance to the signal travelling down the wire.

So—Fraudband just isn’t possible without rerunning ALL the copper! You going to do that might as well run fibre all the way!

Nor will there be any money for infrastructure—it will be the silly Howard govt all over again with infrastructure, health and education spending cut back to make a bigger surplus. In 2013 the private sector is heavily indebted and attempts to raise taxes and cut spending will see less money flowing to the private sector which therefore will cut spending—austerity will see here as in Europe and the UK the public deficits grow, along with unemployment and inflation (the $A will collapse and so make all imports dearer, including petrol.)

Here are a couple of definitions:

Govt deficit—a net flow of money to the private sector in payments to contractors, public servants and the dole and pensions over payments of the private sector in the form of fees and taxes. Enables the private sector to pay of debts (deleverage) and build up savings (disleverage.)

Govt surplus—net flow of money to the govt from the private sector, private sector less able to de- and dis-leverage.

The above definitions ignore the net export/import, admittedly, just to highlight how big a mistake a drive to a surplus would be. Swan and Gillard were wrong to promise a surplus and so are Rudd and Bowen. Abbott just would be a wrecking ball on the economy.

Trying to “reduce the “huge” debt” does not leave any room for a big spend on infrastructure like an NBN, roads, ports, rail lines. Abbott can promise whatever he likes, knowing that Costello’s “Audit” report will allow him to back out of those promises. Similarly for removing the Carbon “Tax” but leaving the compensation in place. Nobody with a brain would believe that one for a second!
