As far as speaking English give me some examples of encountering them personally, not about speaking to call centre people who are largely overseas in the Phillipines etc so not immigrants.

Also do you think the Greeks/ Italians of the 50's could speak English on migrating to Australia and they have turned out great immigrants!

I am suggesting there are some states that want more and some regional centres as well.

The Indian/Sri Lankan accent is extremely difficult to comprehend! I know somebody who went to Hawker College in 2017 and signed up for HISTORY, got somebody of Indian background, couldn't understand a word she said, so changed to a different class.

Indians may THINK they speak English and they do BUT they may as well speak gobblygook ... babble babble babble.

Australians just paid about $2000 a minute for a press conference on Christmas Island that told them nothing new.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his entourage spoke at the event for less than 30 minutes after landing on the island in a Royal Australian Air Force jet.

This breezy outlay of taxpayer cash is cynical and wasteful just weeks before the government releases a federal budget that will confirm deficits of $360 billion over the past decade.

A government that once crusaded on a budget emergency is now soaking taxpayers to save itself at the May election.

The RAAF Boeing 737 is an expensive jet to run. The government’s own documents show it costs about $22,000 to fly it from Sydney to Broome, with several thousand dollars more for the hop to Christmas Island.

The flight from Christmas Island to Perth costs about $15,000 and the return to Canberra another $14,000. These are approximate figures based on flights taken in previous years and costed by the RAAF.

That means the Wednesday press conference cost roughly $60,000 in flights alone, and no doubt more when ancillary costs on the ground are taken into account.

(Journalists, including from The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, joined the flight to cover the event, given Morrison was taking questions on a major policy and election issue, but media companies pay for the flights and do not expect taxpayers to foot the bill).

Morrison and the Immigration Minister, David Coleman, used the press conference to make several points. There are no children left in detention on Nauru and Manus Island. The government has closed 19 detention centres over five years. Boat arrivals have stopped.

Australians have heard each of these arguments before, usually at no extra charge in a press conference from Parliament House.

The publicity about Christmas Island is a risk in itself. When the Nine Network’s Renae Henry asked an Indonesian people smuggler what he thought of the reopening of the Christmas Island centre, he seemed to regard it as encouragement to restart the boats.

"In my opinion if it is reopened I agree and am ready to ferry," he told her three weeks ago.

The cost of this media stunt is small compared to the tens of millions of dollars being spent on government advertising campaigns, but it sends another signal about the government’s anxiety.

Morrison did not need the tropical backdrop of Christmas Island to make his case. There are perfectly good palm trees in Sydney.

Of course the rightards ignore the massive rise in the Australian Government debt since the coalition took over from Labor.

That debt is due to obligations Labor locked in and the Senate has refused to let the Labor financial disaster be reformed.

It's been superseded if not made obsolete before it's even finished. Net service via the mobile phone system is faster, and the whole premise of the NBN was it's supposed to be super fast. When 5G is gets up the NBN will be pretty much redundant, but we still have to pay for it, even if we don't use it.

Then there's Gillard's NDIS. Aside from the massive cost blowouts, the disabled are being left in the lurch because state govts have withdrawn services the NDIS was supposed to cover but now won't.

Rudd's pink batts scheme was scammed by any dodgey operator with a yellow vest and clip board. 4 people got fried and about 100 houses burnt down.

There was "Halls for Schools" for school that didn't need or use them.

There was air conditioners for schools sucking up subsidised renewable power so taxpayers could cough up for a bigger carbon foot print.

Political parties should be legally compelled to compensate the taxpayer indefinitely for the blunders they make while in government. ... Hey, that's actually a great idea, the ALP would send the unions broke, and when the unions raid the superannuation funds we could prosecute them for embezzlement.

It's not like SA produces anything of economic worth anymore so flooding the state with the unemployed means an influx of federal dole money. Theres a reason they refer to them as unemployment "benefits".
