Kevin Rudd cut his political teeth as Goss's Chief of Staff in 1988, the same year his wife founded Thérèse Rein and Associates, later Ingeus. Prior to this, in 1986 Rein worked part-time as a rehabilitation counsellor.

Kevin Rudd was widely known in Qld political circles as Dr Death.
