I doubt that "knuckle dragging" RHODES SCHOLAR would be too worried about it one way or the other. He might even offer the seat to Kev. useless as it is considering the power of veto is in the hands of so few and so the power of the security council is vested in a minority of those sitting on it.

The government has actually borrowed billions to buy a vanity pulpit for Kevin Rudd.

But it’s not going to be occupied by him – unless of course there is another coup by the faceless men and the ALP decides after all the nasty things they said they want him back.

Until then Julia Gillard and Bob Carr will use their very expensive new toy, the vanity pulpit, to bore us with endless “initiatives” on world issues. The fact is the Russians and Chinese who actually run the Security Council will ignore each of them.

And that isn’t all. They have to borrow billions more to pay the balance of the price. They claim it’s “only” costing $26 million. It’s a bargain, they say.

But as with the BER, the pink batts and the NBN, they are very good at hiding the real cost from prying eyes.

To buy the temporary seat on the UN Security Council, the foreign aid budget was upped by a few billion and is scheduled to rise even more. Foreign aid has been aptly described as poor people in rich countries subsidising rich people in poor countries.

Apart from our very many consultants who are becoming very rich enjoying their carbon emitting business class air travel and five star hotels, this pretty accurately describes most foreign aid. And much of Australia’s is now targeted to countries away from our region and who have little to do with us.

We are not a world power, and with what the government has done to our defence forces, will have great difficulty defending our coastline. With the navy now acting as a welcoming force for illegal immigrants their hands are full anyway.

We have bought a seat in a club the majority of whose members are authoritarian, dictatorial and corrupt. We have done it by paying those same members with money we don’t actually have. The Australian taxpayer will pay the interest and find the money to repay the principal.

The vanity pulpit is a useless trinket. Worse it means we are even more involved in an organisation which has demonstrated that not only is it next to useless, it is the avenue for a massive and continuing fraudulent transfer of wealth from the taxpayers of Australia and other Western countries to corrupt authoritarian politicians in poor countries.

The Report by US Reserve Bank chairman, Paul Volcker, found billions of dollars had been swindled from the UN. The resulting body established to fight corruption was far too effective for the UN and was wound up. Investigative bodies were either neutralised or removed.

The fact is the corrupt members of the UN who profit from the fraudulent diversion of funds ensure that any attempt to clean up the UN and its many agencies will not be successful. It may well be that if Governor Romney is elected we may see some action. If the government wants to do anything useful with its vanity pulpit it should lead the push to reform the UN.

Unfortunately that won’t happen.

Expect all sorts of spin coming out of Canberra about very important initiatives in the Security Council. No doubt the many gullible members of the press gallery will recirculate the press releases they receive, thus ensuring that there is less reporting of the government’s continuing financial excesses and policy failures.
