So we should take a $50 billion gamble then? My children and their children will be paying for this. How dare any government waste so much money on something that is only being created through trial and error and an uncosted and unsubstantiated sales pitch. It will be decades before the final account comes in.

Don’t be silly. The NBN will be making profits from a very early stage.

Optical fibre is not some fad new product you know, dates to the sixties, nor are we the first place it is being rolled out in so all that crap about uncosted, trial are just hot air.

The amount being spent rolling out the NBN over ten years is what would otherwise be spent trying to keep the copper going a bit longer.

Really, Mantra, why not try doing a bit of reading about it?

The NBN could add a trillion to the GDP.

Waste? I just said in my previous post that the spend on the NBN is about the level of spend on maintaining the copper. As a result instead of just having ageing copper after 10 years we will have a brand spanking new 21st century communication system!

As bits get built Telstra and now Optus will transfer their business to the NBN so the NBN makes money from the start, plus:

1. Having the NBN—reliable, ubiquitous and redundant (one path gets broken the signal just goes a different way) means telehealth allows the old, the sick and the frail to stay in their own homes longer, saving a fortune in hospital and nursing home capacity. This is kinda important with the baby boomer generation retiring

2. Huge benefits to business! CBD fibre gets massively cheaper and now branch offices/suburban outlets etc can connect to state or national head office and transfer detailed data re inventory, revenue, cash flow. Cloud use will zoom as the NBN gets rolled out.

3. Educational benefits—fast two way communication, not just the 1mb upload limit of ADSL, means schools can broadcast lessons from one bigger school, say a major metro school, to smaller and perhaps more rural, isolated schools and have the kids ask questions etc of the teacher/lecturer giving the lesson

4. With any luck the vast upload and even vaster download speed of the NBN will allow many to telecommute, taking a big load off the roads

5. The NBN will back-connect mobile bb towers to the net, allowing mobile bb to be better and faster, tho it will always suck by comparison to FTTH but it does the one thing fixed cables can’t—allow access while on the road. You need both, you see?

The other thing that will make the NBN super profitable—video is the part of the internet that is really growing fast. It needs HFC at least but FTTH is MUCH superior.

Mantra imagine this scenario that is already happening elsewhere that has FTTH: you sit down at a special corner of your dining room or breakfast nook etc and switch on the screen there—immediately you are talking to your daughter who might have moved to Perth, say, with HiDef video, lip synch etc, real kaffe klatch!

Ever heard of the 1mbps upload limit of HFC and ADSL? Have you heard of people stuck on a congested RIMS who can’t get ADSL? Those on pair gain likewise? Still over 9% using dialup and they would not be doing that from choice!

Serious money does have to be spent on telecoms regardless! The yearly maintenance money is now being spent on building a completely new telecommunications network.

The NBN is good.

And I have seen video calls on Skype—low def, no lipsynch, bulk dropouts etc.
