Karma.
Tony Abbott is set to go off into the sunset with an annual pension of $307,542 per year.
Although well below his prime minister's salary of $539,338, it's not to be sneezed at.
Tony Abbott faced a leadership showdown at Parliament House on Monday night.© Andrew Meares Tony Abbott faced a leadership showdown at Parliament House on Monday night. If he wants, he can take half of it as a lump sum of $1.53 million and take the rest as an annual pension worth $153,771.
Abbott has been in Parliament for 21 years. The rules stipulate that base of his pension is 6.25 per cent of the base parliamentary salary of $195,130 multiplied by the number of years of service.
For Abbott, that's 21 years, which works out at $256,000. But he won't get that much. The base of the pension is limited to 75 per cent of the parliamentary base salary, which means he'll be limited to $146,350.
On top of the base he will get extra for the time he has been a minister, the opposition leader, and the prime minister.
The extra works out at 6.25 per cent of the extra salary for each job, multiplied by the number of years he has been getting it. He was a minister for nine years, the opposition leader for four years, and the prime minister for two years. The loadings are 141,469, 165,861, and 312,208.
That makes a total top-up $161,192. Added to Abbott's base pension, that's an annual pension of $307,542.
The rules allow him to take up to half of it as a lump sum, where it is paid at 10 times the amount sacrificed. That's a lump sum of up to $1.53 million, which could come in handy. His house is still mortgaged. After losing his minister's salary in 2007 he reportedly remortgaged it in order to meet expenses.
If previous prime ministers are any guide, he'll also receive other entitlements. Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard and John Howard each receive an extra $300,000 a year with which to maintain a staffed office, plus travel costs. If Abbott does leave Parliament, deciding what extras he gets will be one of Prime Minister Turnbull's first decisions

I can't stand Turnbull and I am thoroughly disappointed with Julie Bishop. They have lost a lot of votes by back-stabbing Abbott. I certainly will NOT be voting Liberal while Turnbull is leader. I will either not turn up to vote at all and pay the $20 fine or write rude words on the ballot paper.
Abbott might not have been liked but he won the Federal Election fair and square. This is all about Malcolm, the prick! He is in the wrong Party, should head the Greens!

Julie Bishop was always a worry, she's a republican and always had Turnbull's penis on her breath.
And likewise Nef, I won't be voting for Libs while Turncoats the leader either.
Believe me, the electorate won't thank Turnbull for his treachery.
What goes around will come around.
I'd rather see a Labor victory than a Malcolm Turnbull victory.

Oh he's too left wing to lead the Greens, Nef.Neferti~ wrote:I can't stand Turnbull and I am thoroughly disappointed with Julie Bishop. They have lost a lot of votes by back-stabbing Abbott. On a serious note I think Turnbull is the most socially progressive leader of any major party. Much more progressive than Truss, Shorten and even Di Natale.

With Bishop in his corner it was obvious how it was going to go. I can't believe some people didn't see it.

Turnbull is more interested in progressing himself than anything else Skip.
And BO re- Bishop, I saw it coming too, (I even wrote something about it here around the time Abbott won the election) and knew if he didn't clean out his cabinet the moment he won the election it was a forgone conclusion they would destroy him.
It really is sickening, they call this democracy?
We ( the people) elected him, and his own destroy him from within.
I'll bet Tony's gutted, (for now) but there's more than one way to skin a rat.
I have a feeling this won't be the end of Tony.

Re: Should Abbott step down?
Right now, i'm not ruling out an Abbott come-back, complete with a fresh new cabinet, minus the treacherous who aimed to destroy him.
Perhaps this was the only chance he stood at weeding out the rats?
Call me optimistic, but this is what i'm hoping.
If anything, the public will have much sympathy for their slain leader in the lead up to an election.
Hey, it almost worked for Gillard and Rudd.
