Yep - English is more versatile and has become the most adaptable language in its evolution from the influences of other 'new' English speaking nations like USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Something the French don't want to admit and still think they are the 'political' (language) superior - which won't be for long once the Moslems get stuck into them and bring about the end of French Political/Military/Religious empowerment in the hands of the French male in Europe.
French was used for diplomacy because it has very polite forms of speech.

Isn't English the official language of aviation, which would predate the internet?

Wow. From what I read of it - I really do agree with it. The cultural concepts of 'Western' is also associated now with North America and although it's Politics isn't quite truly 'Western', as it still adheres to a Southern & Northern (European) style, more than British. North America is the prime and well proven World's best at Aviation. The American Eagle is their national Animal and Aviation is a very common cultural way of life, even in Canada more than any other nation or region of the world. Even 'Astronomy', with Telescopes are symbolic of the 'Eagle Eye'.
So yes, English will be the Common Tongue/International language eventually in the future (sorry France, Italy, Spain, etc) as it is the core of (currently British infused) Politics (because that's all that Politicians do - just talk) and partnered over Aviation.
I'm sure English will 'evolve' and adapt to a more global responsibility to bring the world together.
Latin or Italian though - does sound like the more flexible and adaptive when it comes to Singing/Songs/Music, etc.
...and if you watch the Chef's in the Restaurants, well - they do their talking with their hands.
