When you grow your own you also get the option of using only heritage varieties, much better flavor and nutrition, usually hardier and more productive than hybrid varieties. A big pot planted with Tommy Toes will give you tasty cherry tomatoes right up the the first frost.

No frost to worry about here in winter (well, maybe in a few low-lying spots) :)

But fruit fly in the warmer half of the year shit me to tears! :x There's almost nothing the little pricks won't have a go at!

Fruit fly all fucked off now and veges are thriving. One of the few enemies you face here for the next six months is powdery mildew. Low-toxicity fungicides see to that.

Colloidal ag sulphur one of the best, what falls in the soil will oxidise, plants take up SO2, the sulphur ends up in those proteins (not all but a lot) needing sulphur.

We used to use bordeux when I worked on an organic smallcrops farm. I remember you really had to rinse out the sprayers because it clogged them otherwise. Seemed to be effective on powdery mildew on the zucchinis and squash though.

Yeah, but you have to cover the ground or the soil becomes full of copper over time. Sulphur OTOH is essential for many proteins.
