There was a surplus before Rudd and Co started throwing money around.

Think of it like using a credit card and maxing it out, then trying to pay it back ... meanwhile still having "overheads" the Government has to keep paying (like welfare, pensions and etcetera). If you max your credit card and only pay the minimum monthly fee, you, too will end up with a huge debt (like the Government has, thanks to Rudd and Co) and may never pay it off. Australia is currently living on "credit".

Perhaps the Government should ask everybody to pay back the $960 or whatever it was that Rudd handed to all and sundry (even people overseas and the dead). I still have my $960 in the Bank and would be happy to send it back to help pay off the debt.
