The government, via the ALP has been hitched up to the corpse of the dead horse and the white white elephant and are committed to the backbone network for broadband. That more than enough for a govt to be involved in for media and distribution.

Agovernment in this day and age has no business being in state television broadcasting whatsoever especially one that's become the epitome of Orwellian nightmares as a hive for untouchable Marxist groupthinkers, thumbing their noses at 50%+ of the population who are forced to fund them or face threat of imprisonment.

I think pollies and/or their parties should be held personally financially responsible for the decisions they make - good decisions the taxpayer pays for with or without gripes, bad/poor/dodgey decisions ... the assets of those responsible are frozen and sold off to reimberse the taxpayer/s.

Considering all the hype and bullshit about how wonderful the NBN would be Vs the reality of both FTTP & FTTN it's pretty obvious those pushing it knew they were lumbering us with an over priced dud which would ultimately destroy the spuiker's credibility.
Having a suspicious mind, I've always believed the the NBN was pushed onto us so the govt and their spooks have a line into virtually every structure on the continent - a surveillance tool/system.

As for the ABC, they can't even live upto their legally obliged charter, so should be sold. And the staff made to go and get a real job.
