They will have to include details about how they have satisfied themselves they are not dual citizens and what they have done to renounce any foreign ties.
I think this sucks.

Have a dual nationality is a major advantage to the kids and family. It doesn't make you less Australian.

I remember when I first travelled 20 year ago, I could not get dual citizenship and would not give up my aussie passport. Then Howard allowed it and I have a UK passport and an aussie one.

It gives my Daughter to right to live, be educated and work in Aus and Europe. a great advantage I wish I had. It doesn't make me less Australian. It is allowed under the law now as it helps bring home cash from working OS.

So this is BS in my opinion. It should be declared (that makes sense) and some countries of dubious nature shouldn't be allowed but FFS what if it is a European country who are our allies or the US. Big deal.

Change the law/constitution, it is out dated. We allow dual citizenship now. Time to catchup.

An election candidate nomination form is a statuary declaration.
Making a false statement in a statuary declaration is an offense punishable by up to I forget how many years in gaol/jail.

I know a really simple way to solve this duel citizenship drama.
Abolish duel citizenship altogether ... either you're an Australian or you're not.
If Donald Trump is so close to the Ruskis, why couldn't he get Vladimir Putin to put novichok in Xi Jjinping's lipstick?

investigated before they nominate anyone .. the same goes for independents

if anyone should know the rules its people running for govt..

That's how it was until Howard changed it.
I used to think the same, but now I benefit from dual citizenship so..... I am very happy with the change.
Even the Yanks permit it now.

As far as I know the US does not recognise dual citizenship. Although you can keep your citizenship with another country they do not recognise it. In their eyes you are an American and an American only.

The last time I checked citizenship requirements in the USA was 15 or so years ago. I found that if I married an American and moved there, I would lose my Australian Passport and citizenship. I haven't checked lately, but presume it is still that way. As Black Orchid said "you are an American only".

You don't lose your Australian passport and/or citizenship per se because Australia recognises dual citizens. You just can't use it leaving or entering the USA once you become an American citizen because they do not recognise it.

can you vote in an American election though?

I met an American lady many years ago who was an Australian war bride.
born in Wollongong...she had to relinquish her aussie citz to be able to vote...

that could of course have changed now..

I think this is the way it works and am using USA/Australia as an example.

Once you are an American citizen yes you are eligible to vote and must use your US passport to leave and enter that country but you can still hold your Aussie passport (as Australia does recognise dual citizenship) and can use that once you are out of the USA if you choose too. Same with USA/UK.
