According to a number of my friends who are former ADF personnel, army pay has always been poor.
But you gain skills not available elsewhere and you get to blow things up.
One mate spent 9 years in the army and did all the explosives courses. That got him a powdermans ticket, which got him jobs in mines.
If personnel don't like the pay, they can quit when their 3 years is up, and most do.

I'm led to believe the army has a system now where you can sign up for 1 year to see if you like it or not.

What disgusts me more is the lefty scum that use the deaths of 38 Australians as an avenue to attack Abbott when he has done what he can in a difficult and tragic situation and is still pushing for justice. This is nothing untoward or out of the ordinary for Putin- he often deploys ships into the waster's of many a country he attends for these types of meetings...Bishop said that they have known of the deployment of navy ships from Russia for quite some time and it is Putin's right exercise his ships in this manner.. she didn't deny it was a "show of force" which btw was instigated by Abbott in the first place- what a pair of wankers..my penis is bigger than your's.

Abbott's language needs to be measured more calm and statesmen like in his dealings with world leaders...he has got to adopt a calm and less hysterical way of speaking to them. Diplomacy is a huge part of his job, pity he is such a thick meathead.
