Re: Liberal backlash against Abbott's climate change policy
Abbott has been campaigning for three years.
A surplus right now is the wrong fiscal setting and moderate deficits are correct. The private sector which were encouraged to borrow to the hilt to spend on holidays, SUVs, McMansions etc are now, since the GFC, deleveraging, paying off credit cards and mortgages, personal loans and other credit. Bank have reported most mortgagees have kept their payments the same as interest rates have dropped, paying off that mortgage faster.
The private sector is also disleveraging, building up savings. The savings rate is back to the long term rate of 10% which is healthy.
Let us define the terms surplus and deficit:
Surplus—the government takes more from the private sector by way of taxes and charges than it gives the private sector by way of payments
Deficit—the government gives more to the private sector than it takes in taxes and charges.
Any attempt to get back into a surplus—austerity—will see a rapid increase in unemployment. Modest deficits are the right setting for now.

If some Politician was game enough to stop the rot they would be crucified. What we really need is someone with enough guts to DO SOMETHING, but pollies are so power hungry they will do anything to stay in power. That doesn't just apply to the Federal Government either, the States need to pull their heads in too.mantra wrote:I agree with most of your points. It seems everyone now has an entitlement mentality. When did porkbarreling start? Years ago surpluses went towards research, basic education and health. Now it goes towards school shoes, immunisation (or not), computers, having a baby, free insulation, full pensions for self retirees, disability for young healthy people etc and a whole list of unessential handouts - the tax burden falling on single workers mainly.
Off Topic.
I see some headline this morning about immunisation ... prove your kids have it or they won't be allowed to start school ... or something.
I hate to see what Health will be like in 25 years if we don't do something NOW. Kids not immunised so measles, mumps, chickenpox, whooping cough, diphtheria, polio etc will be back. These things can kill children and if an adult gets them, also deadly. Most childhood immunisation only covers you while a child. IF there is an outbreak of, say measles or mumps and you catch them as an adult, there could be dire consequences.Whooping cough was going around a while back and my GP made me get a booster shot. I had the immunisation when a baby but he said it would have "worn off" by now. Geeze.
Then we have all the "asylum seekers" with TB, typhoid, cholera and whatever bringing those diseases into our country. All these diseases are preventable and haven't been seen in Australia for generations.

Parents now get about $200 plus for each immunisation. There's even a loophole where they can get it if they don't. In the early 90's your child couldn't start kindy unless you showed proof of full immunisation.Neferti~ wrote: I see some headline this morning about immunisation ... prove your kids have it or they won't be allowed to start school ... or something.

Some child caught typhoid the other day and he was immunised.
Asylum seekers used to go through rigorous health checks before they were released into the community - now there are so many of them they're no longer screened thoroughly and have all sorts of weird diseases alien to Australia. This is not a Gillard phenomenon - health checks became lax more than a decade ago - possibly longer. I remember whinging about it on Cracker.
We can't afford to check everyone anymore, nor do we have the resources for it. Our kids and grandkids will pay for it in the future.

Health checks on illegals were fine until the left started bringing them in by the tens of thousands.
Disease redistribution: the ultimate lefty goal.

How about you bring in some evidence of no global warming and explain the loss of ice at both poles.

OK, won this one too.
Loss of polar ice indicates the oceans are warming up.
Last N & S Hemisphere summers set new maximum temperature records.

It will be wonderful to watch the ALP commit suicide twice.
