ABS—mobile bb does 10% of data moving.

Cisco—in 2016 mobile bb does 16% of data moving.

What moves the other 90 or 84% of data? Fixed line of course!

Copper just can’t cope now, and the network is deteriorating: we have pair gain, we have congested RIMS, we have wireless blackspots.

Fibre to the Home is all that can carry the load.

Sydney Harbor Bridge, Snowy Mountains Scheme, rollout of the copper CAN and now the NBN. Wasn’t Liberal govts built these huge assets tho Lib MPs have been lobbying NBN Co to get the NBN to their rural electorates, rural councils likewise—no way would private enterprise build to the bush.

Data moving has never required $50+Bn of taxpayers money. Only a retard would suggest so

Guess what, retard...

If, as you confessed, you know fuck–all about the ’net how can you say how much is needed to run out the NBN?

Have you tried working out what the cost of not running out the NBN would be?

I know enough not to drool saliva over a report from a communications equipment provider that stand to benefit from billions of taxpayer money thrown at it by an incompetent wasteful piece of shit Liebor govt

You should go back to shooting your load over the pictures of Cuntroy and Gough Whitless that you have plastered over the roof of your single bed

Australia's official digital 'visionary': Conroy
Australia now has its own official visionary.

Senator Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, has collected his Visionary of the Year award from the New York-based Intelligent Community Forum for his work establishing the national broadband network (NBN).

Senator Conroy was in New York city last week to receive the accolade, using the opportunity to level scathing attacks at Telstra which he identified as a major initial obstacle in the project's implementation.

Advertisement: Story continues below
"The challenge for our government was at the time how do we deal with our incumbent Telstra [...] I gave them two options - they could agree to a prospective structural separation over 10 years [...] if they didn't agree they would be banned from buying new mobile spectrum of 4G services. Telstra's management chose to agree to the NBN."

He said the NBN was a central platform to create intelligent communities, despite opposition to the infrastructure project from some quarters.

"We’re embarking on a project to make the whole of our continent an intelligent community. We know the world is watching us. Some wonder why we’re doing it, others wish they could," he said.

The Opposition is against the government's $37 billion fibre-optic plan, arguing a country-wide broadband network could be achieved with a combination of existing technologies for less. But the plan has impressed international observers who see it as a direct result of Senator Conroy's personal work. He was first announced as the recipient of the award in March.

"Believe me, Senator Conroy is redefining the role of government for the modern era," said Louis Zacharilla, co-founder of the ICF, a global think tank that studies the economic and social development of what it calls "the 21st Century community".

"Government doesn't have to be big, it doesn't have to be small, it just has to be smart. He is building the new railroad for all of us through his vision and we will make sure that his words go out to the rest of the world."

Those that know, applaud the NBN (and the Carbon Price and the consequent tripling of the tax free threshold etc etc.)

Hmmm it looks like the codeine rage is building so I will take my leave for the night.

Monk,

As an expert on NBN can you tell me if NBN is planned to be used with WiFi hotspots all over the country?

Is it really just pipes to premises?

That is, you can roam from WiFi to Wifi as you are mobile.

Mobility is the future.

Australia 'should not be scared' of NBN cost

Broadband to account for AUD$1trillion of activity by 2050
By Simon Sharwood, APAC Editor • Get more from this author

Australia should not be afraid of the NBN's price tag, but should be scared enough to build the network, according to Phil Ruthven, founder and chairman of research company IBISWworld.

Speaking at the launch of a study commissioned by IBM, A Snaphsot of Australia's Digital Future to 2050, Ruthven predicted the nation's gross domestic product will surge thanks to ubiquitous connectivity. He even labelled data networks a “new utility” and predicted they will generate AUD$1trillion of annual revenue by 2050, rather more than the $131bn data networks generate today.

“Other nations are already into gigabit speed broadband and we are not there yet,” Ruthven told the launch. “High speed broadband is not a delete option for Australia.”

Ruthven's remarks were preceded by Andrew Stevens, IBM's managing director for Australia and New Zealand, who said the company's leadership is “a little frustrated by ... debate and discussion and the lack of vision” and therefore decided to prove, or disprove, broadband's economic potential.

“The report proves our confidence,” Stevens said. “The findings are astonishing: the big surprise is how significant and deep the broadband impact will be.” Stevens then said he hopes the report encourages the community to look beyond the electoral cycle and consider the transformative power of broadband and its potential to “in a very positive sense transform living standards positively in Australia.”

“We we want to say there is a gap in terms of vision,” he said, adding that the NBN “fits very well with our view of the economy.”

Ruthven then said that debate over the cost of the NBN is unproductive, as “you can use numbers to scare the dog off a chain.”

Ruthven's own numbers suggest that the sunk cost of Australia's telecoms infrastructure are AUD$70billion, and that the annual depreciation rate of that kit almost exactly matches the yearly spend envisaged by NBNco's current rollout plan. The NBN is therefore sustaining the level of investment in Australia's comms infrastructure, although Ruthven said “nobody knows if the NBN formula is the best.”

Nobody knows if the NBN formula is the best. Hmm it is better than whatever else gets put up as a solution.

Everyone knows that the NBN is the best...it's costing a bloody fortune

The question is... Is a Ferrari required to get the kids to school and back?
