Fiber-optic communication is a method of transmitting information from one place to another by sending pulses of light through an optical fiber. The light forms an electromagnetic carrier wave that is modulated to carry information. First developed in the 1970s, fiber-optic communication systems have revolutionized the telecommunications industry and have played a major role in the advent of the Information Age. Because of its advantages over electrical transmission, optical fibers have largely replaced copper wire communications in core networks in the developed world.
Well, except for Australia .... apparently!

Worst of the worst: Photos of Australia’s copper network

photo gallery You don’t always have a perfect day. Some days, you just get out of bed on the wrong side of the bed, and things go wrong for you all day. Australia’s copper telecommunications network is like that. Most days it works OK, but on some days it’s just a shocker. And there’s a very good reason why — it’s old and in many areas it hasn’t been maintained very well.

These photos were sent in by Delimiter readers following our request over a week ago for some of the worst photos of the copper network in real life. What we’re seeking to do with this article is provide a realistic view into what the infrastructure which the nation relies on day in day out really looks like in some places, in the context of the current debate about upgrading it. I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to send these photos in. It’s really appreciated. Also, if you have time, check out this thread on Whirlpool for further discussion of this issue.

The first photo is of a telecommunications pit outside a house in Sydney.

You are such a dope.
It's a dirty pit mel... wait till the bury fibre cables in your footpath, they will be completely covered by dirt too. :rofl

So no killer application exists, is foreshadowed or even dreamed of by the protagonists?

They have no idea why they 'need' it or what they are going to do with it once they get it...just keep squealing hysterically

How many of us have had connectivity issues with the current copper wiring, have had to have Telstra come out and fiddle around with the wiring?

We had a recent dilemma here in Sydney whereby we had trouble (more so my son) for several months.

We were formerly Dodo customers, who's rep got so fed up with Telstra relinquishing on their duty to repair the lines Dodo leased from them that they told us we might as well become Telstra Customers if we want the problem fixed, as it was not within their power to entirely repair the problem, and this was even after we had lodged a complaint with the Telecommunications Ombudsman.

So, we switch to Telstra, who then tell us that the only way to stop the drop-outs is to change plans, this is to go fiber as the cables in the street were not worth repairing and they were in process of phasing them out all together.

So... $100 p/m later, sure, we have the fastest and the best internet, but unfortunately, we have no say as to the ISP that provides us with an internet service.

If we go with another (other than Telstra) provider, they make sure the lines they lease out to their competitors are in poor repair, and if we stay with Telstra, we are helpless to modify the plan we are on because that's what fibre-optic costs in our area at present.

If we go back to "Copper-cable" we are certain of more drop-outs.

So... far better to have the Coalition roll out something less communist, but more than an old copper stove... than risk the ALP having their way with a NBN-co and our telicos.

Thats how I see it.

Anyone who uses a budget service provider like Dodo doesn't deserve to be on the Internet, let alone whinge about their connection and blame the copper

So according to your 'story' you are now
1. On FO through the NBN.
2. They are forcing you to stay with Telstra against all the information provided that you can shift to any other RSP
3. The NBN rollout has stopped any fault finding service for the next 20 years because its no longer Telstras problem?

Dodo was fine before Labor got elected, why, I am not sure, but we were customers for 9 years.

1) Unsure, just know we are getting high speed fiber optic internet, this and are paying a fortune for it.
2) Sure, we can transfer to another ISP, if we want the same problems we had before, as Telstra don't care much for the lines they lease to other ISP. The worse they appear to be performing, the more likely their custom will (like we have) end up going back over to Telstra out of sheer frustration and pointless trouble shooting.
3) Unsure about this, but it makes sense that Telstra will report only what the NBN-co tell them to report.

1. You either are or you aren't. You would know if you were because you would have a crapload of new boxes and wiring on the wall

2. RSP not ISP if you are on FO. They all use the same FO

3. Telstra still have the USO and it would be fixed by them. Dodo is shit tier.

Dodo is shit now that something (unsure what) has changed seemingly enabling Telstra to get away with neglecting to maintain the lines they lease to their competitors.

And it's not just Dodo....it's any rival who leases Telstras infrastructure.

This is why we need for the Coalitions NBN to be a viable contender, at present, it's a joke.

Very disappointing at best.
