Because back in 2005, the Australian Government announced proposals to amend the media ownership laws, and needless to say, this would not have impressed Murdoch.
So, Rudds only enduring what Howard would have endured back in 2007 ... only Howard had balls.

The Australian Government legislated specific controls over the ownership of broadcasting on television and radio in the Broadcasting Services Act 1992. These effectively prohibit ownership of more than one television station or two radio stations in a given market.The Commonwealth's legislative reach over print media ownership is largely limited to general competition law such as the Trade Practices Act 1974.

Murdoch actually owns only about 32% of the media and has a market share of about 59% from that 32%, so I don't know where this magical '70%' lie has come from but you can guess it has its roots deep withing the bowels of the ALP where lies are fermented and bullshit churned out by the semi- trailer load.
