A solicitor is like a prostitute. They take your money and tell you lies.
Where as a barrister takes your money and tells lies for you.
A QC doesn't just tell lies, they remodel the entire story.

Like that a lot Yogi, hope you don't mind if I keep it for future use.

I think Yogi well knows the difference even though you are playing with terms... a Barrister is a "lawyer"... Didn't you know
"lawyer" is usually a generic term? "Lawyer" was being used as a specific term by Nef to describe a Barrister, as is common in our society. I thought I already explained that to you. Now you are having a shot at Yogi???

The term "lawyer" is a generic term which covers both solicitors and barristers.
In some states, a lawyer may practise as both a solicitor and barrister, while in others, like Qld, you must choose to be either a solicitor or barrister (your signature is entered into one of two rolls held by the Supreme Court of Qld).

Gillard was practising law in Victoria. The titles tend to differ from State to State (as does the law itself) and have changed since 1996.

Anyway:-

Lawyer = a generic term for someone who has completed a Law Degree.

Solicitor = someone who has a Practising Certificate and who is therefore qualified to practise Law in a Law Firm.

Barrister = someone who has been admitted to the Bar and accepts briefs from Solicitors for specialised work.

I noted that Rorschach and Yogi were discussing Solicitors so presumed you were too lazy to look up the definition. I am a Victorian (was) and they were not called Lawyers when I lived there. They were Solicitors. Gillard worked as a Solicitor in Melbourne.

The term Lawyer has become popular in Australia since we started speaking Yank and getting our ideas about The Law off TV.
