Seeing as we have a thread regarding Afghanistan, and Yankmania is opening stating that she believes her 'allies' need to step up and be prepared to sacrifice more of their young & best to a seemingly fruitless cause, I'd like to sound out opinions on whether Australia should bow & scrape, or say 'talk to da hand'?

My understanding of our presence in Afghanistan is purely for reconstruction purposes. The combat troops we have there are providing security for reconstruction teams and don't go actively seeking combat with the Taliban. I could be wrong. I realise the SAS are there, undoubtedly supporting multi-national incursions but hardly on a deliberate confrontational basis. I've heard it mooted that should we buckle to an increase in the ANZUS premium likely a separate battalion of 500 personnel would be formed, specifically for combat operations.

Should we, or shouldn't we?

Australia is certainly doing more than NATO, except the US (of course) and the UK, so we have not succumbed to that European "who cares of the Talaban win and enslave an entire nation again and then sponor attacks against us mentality) and Australia is in offensive operations.

Which is probably why Obama wants us to punch more rather than say, Holland or France.
