They made a big mistake forming a party IMHO, they would have been better off staying out of parliament and lobbying for action via conservation groups etc. In Parliament their hard line, non-accommodating stance will sideline them on most issues, like the CPRS. even if the Greens get the balance of power in the next Senate they will be frozen out of negotiations if they keep going as they have.
The Greens voted against Rudd's version of the ETS because it wouldn't have worked. Australians would have had to pay twice for this tax, while many of the major emitting industries were subsidised. Ultimately there would have been no reduction in emissions and you would know that if you had bothered to look at this issue properly. Copenhagen was a complete failure and Rudd didn't have a mandate on this scheme. It wasn't just the Greens who didn't support it.

If the Greens get the opportunity to achieve a balance of power, of course they won't be frozen out of negotiations. Rudd followed through on few deals with them and that was a big mistake. Julia Gillard might be a little more practical and listen to them this time around. If she doesn't, maybe Abbott will.

Nah. They want AGW to stay as an issue so they progress and grow as a parliamentary Party. The CPRS was fairly weak but once a framework was set up the number of permits etc could be reduced over time. Rudd didn't negotiate with the Greens because of their rigid insistence of 40% cuts straightaway. Like what a child might want and the Greens didn't have the numbers to deliver the ETS anyway.

The image of St Bob sitting there chatting and joking with garbage like Barnyard and Minchin will hurt the Greens.
