Re: kruddys resource tax
Let's start with getting it right, then worry about how complicated to make it.

It is foolish, mining profit margins are low, by which I mean the profit levels per amount invested are slimmer than many other industries, and mining is putting more of it's profits back into investments in efficiency and productivity, so the proposal is to penalize one of the few industries in Australia that is doing things right.
In WA the proposal has people so hot there is now talk about if we can leave the Commonwealth.
Labor don't want to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs but they want to take so many eggs the goose may just give up laying.

See, now you have to explain how to " do it properly" and "get it right"freediver wrote:Let's start with getting it right, then worry about how complicated to make it.
Meaningless one line slogans only work on labor voters

Talk is cheap. In WA the proposal has people so hot there is now talk about if we can leave the Commonwealth.
I thought I did. You use the revenue raised to lower other taxes.See, now you have to explain how to " do it properly" and "get it right"

Mining profits are low in proportion to the amount of investment it takes to survive in the market and the volatility of pricing in that market. Mining is very capital intensive, you need big money to make it work long term because of the price volatility and cost of producing product.
This is the one market where the government needs to stay out of domestically while intervening internationally, give our producers the best environment (low tax) while making the Chinese pay dear.
After all, this is how China has become the global economic power.
As for WA, all talk is cheap here, we are too busy working and paying the rest of Australia's rent.

I thought I did. You use the revenue raised to lower other taxes.
Thus widget A produced in Australia as well as exported by Aussie company A becomes more expensive locally
No, you didn't.Not necessarily.
This is typical LW thinking. Lets just do it and worry about the consequences laterLet's start with getting it right, then worry about how complicated to make it.

I did not suggest we act first and think later. I suggested we understand the problem first before getting into details.

I addressed it directly. Some things will go up in price, some will go down. You could have easily taken up that point rather than your silly tangent.
