I like the idea of the death penalty but don't like the Govt being the ones who administer it.
A reminder all, people like Aussie would be the ones making the decisions.

If someone hurt my family, I'll wait a few years after their out of jail then take them on a boat ride past the continental shelf.

Whilst I believe it isn't necessarily a deterrent I think for some crimes, especially repeat offenders, it saves us the hassle of having to overcrowd our jails to keep them housed and wherein too many are radicalised nowadays.

This statement though ...
No one has ever been deterred it seems by the application of the Death Penalty
is one of the most ridiculous I have ever seen.
You have evidence to the contrary, Black Orchid? Put it forward then. No evidence we just have your opinion. Opinion which is in this case rather faulty.
Are you now a mind reader of 7.5 billion people? Where is your evidence, Brian? Or is it just your opinion on behalf of planet Earth?

To say that "no one has ever been deterred" by the death penalty is patently ridiculous!

For the few who get caught in places like Bali and Thailand trying to defy their death penalty laws by running drugs there would be many, many, many more who rightly conclude that it just isn't worth the risk!

You are the 'faulty' one with your ridiculous blanket statements.

An exception. It is easy to condemn Dimitrious Gargasoulas.
There is little doubt he is guilty but does killing him actually achieve, Bobby? Death is an easy way out.
I'd much rather that he was in prison where he can rot.
Gargasoulas took the lives of many innocent people & left countless others maimed for life.
Justice demands that he be hanged in front of the steps of parliament.

My comment is based on the reality that the Death Penalty has not stopped crime occurring. The claim is that the Death Penalty deters crime. It has obviously failed at that, now hasn't it?

You are claiming that somone, anyone has been deterred by the Death Penalty. Time to put up or shut up, Black Orchid.

Typical Brian tactics, Black orchid. Brian makes assertions, he need not provide proof. You make an assertion, you must provide proof. His position then becomes, "Unless you can prove me wrong, this proves me right."

Bogan writes 2,885 words on this topic arguing 8 separate points and giving 9 examples of men who should have been executed, and if they had, many innocent women and children's lives would have been saved. Brian writes 265 words making unsubstantiated generalisations, and gives no examples to support his few premises. He did not even try to address the 8 separate points I made.

No wonder people are voting for Trump, Brexit and Pauline, and the Left are losing it.

Brian Ross wrote

The Death Penalty achieves nothing other than revenge on the person who is often purported to be the culprit of a crime.
This is a declaration unsupported by a reasoned argument.
Brian Ross

As experience has shown, all too often in the rush to punish the culprit, the wrong person has been arrested, tried and convicted - often purely upon prejudge by the police and courts. The person might just be a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time and still he is nabbed and little real investigation is attempted.
Historically, you do have a point. But as a person interested in youtube video's like Forensic Files, I was informed by one video that juries in the USA today will not recommend the death penalty unless there is strong forensic evidence pointing to the guilt of the defendant
Brian Ross in the crime.

Australia was founded because the Death Penalty was deemed too harsh and unfair in the UK in the latter half of the 18th century. Jurists correctly surmised that it was too widely applied and often unfairly used to condemn people who because of circumstance were forced to steal in order to live.
That was because there were 400 crimes where the punishment was death by hanging. We have moved on a lot since then. Why can't we just look at the facts and weigh them, to work out what is best for the community?
Brian Ross

The Death Penalty fails to deter. No one has ever been deterred it seems by the application of the Death Penalty, much to the chagrin of it's champions.
Once again, an unsupported statement. And it does not address any of the 8 points I made which clearly displayed that executing the worst murderers in society would have saved the lives of innocent women and children. And in a world where we are stupid enough to import MS-13 into our country, unless we use lethal force, then the narcoterrorists will win, and our country will resemble another third world sheethole.
Brian Ross

The public in Australia has deemed that it is unfair, unjust and unnecessary. So Governments have complied with those wishes and removed it from the courts' ability to apply it.
That is total crap. The "public" in Australia hardly clamoured to remove the death penalty. It was once again, a decision imposed from above by a Lib/Lab political establishment who took no regard for what the electorate thinks. If you say that the public does not want capitol punishment, then would you would support a referenda to validate your position?
Brian Ross wrote

All these reason are why the Death Penalty has been abandoned by Australian Governments. As much as those who advocate it, it's history is besmirched by too many mistakes, and too many innocent people being condemned to it.
That is for the people to decide. In democratic societies, governments are not our rulers, they rule by the consent of the governed.

Of course Brian thinks that putting somebody in jail for "life" is a good idea. That costs $100,000 -$120,000 per year which creates jobs in the public service, and which the good old Aussie taxpayer, with their endlessly deep pockets, can pay for.

Apparently the death penalty is not a deterrent and is very expensive to implement.
It definitely deters repeat offenders if they are dead. And it need not be expensive to implement. The Chinese do it quite cheaply. They even charge he families of the executed for the price of the bullet.

I agree with those points.

In a crime situation, if the offenders are possibly facing the death penalty, well, it does not matter what they do.
It can make situations worse for victims.
If an offender is deranged mentally or by drugs, they will likely not consider the penalties anyway.

In the US they provide legal avenues for the prisoners, that costs all the money.

overall, I think the penal system fails everyone

No Brian. Your comment was that "No-one has ever been deterred" by the death penalty. A ridiculous sweeping statement. Perhaps you should think about how you phrase things. You could have easily said "there is little evidence that the death penalty deters crime" and even then how many people are going to say "I would have killed so and so but I didn't want to risk the electric chair" or "I could have made millions running heroin out of Thailand but I didn't want to risk dying"?

The onus is not on me to provide proof that there would most definitely be at least some people in this big wide world of ours that the death penalty has deterred from committing a crime. The onus is on you to prove your outlandish claim that "no-one has ever been deterred by the death penalty", which obviously you cannot.

I did put up but it's time that you shut up!
