That amazes me as well, lets hope cods reads those figures and thinks about it.Black Orchid wrote:The median price of a house in Sydney is now $1 Million.Redneck wrote:In Sydney, the average house cost $28,000 in 1975. Today, it costs $850,194. That’s 30 times as much as it used to be. Your 10-times as much annual earnings isn’t looking too great right now, huh?
I cannot, for the life of me, understand how some people can hold this selfish and misguided view. And for those that say that young people now want it all for nothing and just need to go without and save save save simply do not have a clue!Redneck wrote:So dont kid yourself you had it harder than todays youngsters you are way out!
What I think she may be thinking of is the fact that in recent years ( not now a few years back) couples that could afford a house had to have a large house , four bedrooms, family room and two bathrooms, garage under fully carpeted etc, far different from the houses most people bought when we started out ( 10-12 squares mostly) and as she stated we had sheets up at the windows in the spare rooms, we sanded and stained the pine floorboards initially instead of carpet..
What I am saying is now younsters cant afford any house and even struggle with buying an apartment in some areas.

Sounds very selfish to me, I think I would rather be a person that cares about our children and grandchildren's futures rather than adopt cods selfish attitude of I worked hard for my house and bugger the present generation.lisa jones wrote:Do your children and grand children know you don't care about new home buyers?cods wrote:

dont worry about my kids lisa...only one hasnt got any property and thats his own fault..as for the grandkids.. the eldest is coming up for 21 and I tell them all save save save..I give them money all the time..I opened bank accounts for each and everyone of them when I retired....I talk what I call commonsense to them whenever they are around.....so dont worry about them lisa....hopefully they will never have to ask the govt for a handout.
we didnt expect anythign when we got our first home...and we could only borrow 85% of the price...or something like that...the onlt thing the govt has ever given me is my pension...my husband died before he was old enough to collect...
I am thinking the way this generation is going, and the price of dying is going.. it wont be long before they will ask for tax deductions for funerals..

selfish... I will remember that..
Never had a day on the dole in my life cods!
I do accept my part pension, how greedy of me!
Hawaii!
For 10 days!
Now that is hitting below the belt, I wasnt going to northern Europe like someone I know on here did, where was it again cods and how long was it again, bet that cost a penny or two.
My kids and grandkids will do well out of my karking it, not as well as Lisas with her vast property portfolio like you and yours have but I wont be a Mr (or Mrs in your case)s Scrooge like some!

Cods, our kids (and grandkids) need to learn to :
1. Study hard
2. Work hard
3. Save hard
4. Invest smart
The only way they can achieve these ^^^^^ is by parental example and a lot of support and encouragement.

Re: Anyone here know......
Apart from this thread starting as a question about Pensions ...
It's gone way Off Topic and is now about the Cost of Housing?
Anyway, can anybody here explain (or try to) just WHY the cost of housing has risen so much in comparison to wages? Surely it can't be all about "negative gearing"?
Here's a few observations:
Why will the Bank loan up to 95% of the purchase price these days?
Way back Banks only loaned on the husband's income, even though the wife was working (women have babies and need to stay At Home).
The first time that a female could borrow for a house WITHOUT having a spouse, was in the Hawke days. Around the same time, females could actually get a loan for a car, furniture and so forth WITHOUT having to have a male person as a Guarantor!
If I recall correctly, Negative Gearing came in during the Hawke era as well.
So shall we blame Bob for screwing up the housing for young people to save and buy?
The silly old bugger is still pontificating in his dotage about something or other.
BRING BACK BOB .... for amusement sake and ask him WHY ... hey?

well I am not the one being all pious and thinking and worrying and caring about the younger generation AM I?>>
Im the SELFISH ONE>..
and my kids paid for my fare anyway...so there...they have far more money than me.. and or I ever had to be honest...... and I expect their kids to do even better...they are all public servants...very well paid ..
my kids have done it on their own... my son will remain nameless... but the girls have done it all without me I can assure you...when it comes to money I have a very generous family...one lot will inherit god knows what in Portugal not that it is worth all that much at this time....good luck to them I inherited nothing.....not a thing...so my kids also will benefit from me falling off the twig...its not worth leaving them money as it will get taken by the govt one way or another...
anyway red we all have our own opinions on the way things are done today....and I believe in god helps those who help themselves....and I always say once you give something....like welfare its very hard to take it away..
Turnbull is now finding that with the pensioners who are about to lose some of their benefits..
instead of being grateful for all they have had.... they are angry because they believe its their right...oh well..
we cant afford to give it to the young... as well as the aged can we?????
