That's because you don't have anyone to form a carbon market with. Emission-based schemes work for the EU since you've got a couple dozen countries all in a space half the size of the US. Australia is geographically isolated, so an emissions scheme simply won't work for you as there's no one to trade with.

Either way, it's all based on power-generation/usage, so the end result is the same.

They now expect the Coalition government to implement their policy... policy they lost the election with. Shades of their will be no carbon tax...

Australia's ratification of Kyoto was one of the first acts of the Labor Government in 2007. Our willingness to join a second commitment period was widely welcomed at the Doha conference and provided impetus for progress at the talks.

Oh and on the ETS, (you do know what that is right?) was to be joined with Europe. So much for your we is all alone in the world statement.

The Kyoto Protocol was finally negotiated and concluded at the 3rd meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP-3) in December 1997 in Kyoto, Japan, following a series of submissions by Parties to the UNFCCC and talks held by the Ad Hoc Working Group established after COP-1 held in Berlin, 1995. The Kyoto Protocol entered into force generally on 16 February 2005. Australia signed the Kyoto Protocol on 24 April 1998, but did not ratify until 12 December 2007 following the election of the ALP government. To date, 182 parties have ratified the Kyoto Protocol.

You heard on the news this morning, I assume, that the energy companies are saying that there will probably not be a reduction in our electricity bills even when the tax is repealed. I said this months ago on a few occasions. Of course they will find something else to use our money for. Repealing this tax is only another Abbott ideology and it's going to be a costly one at that.

At present those on low incomes are getting subsidies for the tax - this will be removed and people will see no difference in their bills and they won't be getting any help from the government this time around.

Let's see how Abbott gets out of this one.
