The surreal part about it is that he started by telling Abbott not to run a negative campaign.

Actually he claimed he was against all the negativity and wouldn't stoop to being negative.

"I believe all Australians are sick and tired of negative politics," he opened the TV ad that Labor aired in early July. "I believe people want all of us to raise the standards."

"Australia is too open and positive a nation to retreat into a tight little ball of negativity," Rudd had declared in calling the election. "This election will be about who the Australian people trust to best lead them through the difficult new economic challenges which now lie ahead."
