Gay marriage advocates have dismissed Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's offer to hold a referendum on gay marriage if Tony Abbott refuses to allow Coalition members a conscience vote on the issue.
Rodney Croome, the national convenor of Australian Marriage equality, says any public vote could be used by reform opponents to whip up a fear campaign.
Mr Rudd was once an opponent of marriage equality, but after what he calls a "difficult personal journey", announced in May that he had switched his position.
Rudds attempt to cash-in on politicising this issue has failed miserably.
Though what some of you may not be aware of is that irrespective of his new stance on the issue of Gay Marriage, he made it quite clear on his blog that despite his 'alleged' change of heart he wont be taking any leadership on the matter nationally.
The last 4 sentences of his gay-marriage disclaimer on his blog, published Monday, 20 May 2013 are as follows...
For the record, I will not be taking any leadership role on this issue nationally. My core interest is to be clear-cut about the change in my position locally on this highly controversial issue before the next election, so that my constituents are fully aware of my position when they next visit the ballot box. That, I believe, is the right thing to do.

So in other words, he wants his constitutes and voters (particularly the gay community) to believe that whilst he has absolutely no intentions of legislating gay marriage, or defending their perceived rite to such on a national level, this is , take it to a referendum, he still wants them to believe he's not as conservative as Abbott these days, and now thinks gay marriage is ok.
But can we take what Rudd says to the bank?
No,,,because it's a pathetic attempt to score votes from the more progressive among us, and Gay Marriage supporters.
