A good response to Gonski might remove some more Howard policy shit. The move to give more money to private schools has reulted. . .in a dropping of our educational achievements, a dumbing down of our students! The Whitlam shake-out became something of a general settlement in Australian schools policy through to the turn of the century. The states continued to school the vast majority of Australian students through to year 12. Canberra tipped in some extra funding to the non-government schools and some residual dollars to the public systems. This was mainly achieved through a series of complicated funding formulas which were soon to become notorious to policy wonks, with acronyms such as AGSRC and SES.
But non-government schools funding really got going in earnest under Kemp and Howard. As a result, Australia has a split system. The states fund the public schools where the majority of Australian kids are still educated. Canberra gives more and more funding to the non-government sector. In fact, the Commonwealth now spends more money on non-government schools than it does on universities.
Of course, the govt wants to show a surplus so no extra money in the next two years.
