Well, I get it; Germany is a democracy and banned all Nazis, still does as far as I know.

Still, one had to be a Baithist to get anywhere in Saddam’s nightmare. I would offer an amnesty and let the people vote for who they will.

Biden evidently said that they shoudl get the candidates to denounce the Ba'ath party membership and stand anyway.

That is a sensible idea, but the US has no say in it sense the Iraqis voted on their constitution in 2005.

Despite the Sunni Ba'athist regime under Saddam, iirc the Sunni's are the minority. Banning them then is the equivalent to the way we have treated blacks, gays, etc over the years.

There is something in what Frogen said about not allowing genocidal maniacs to nominate/stand. However, as you say these are Sunnis who happen to have been members of the Ba'ath party and Sunnis are a significant if small sector of the community.
I note that several Shi'ites of differing orientation to the current leader have also been denied a chance to stand. How can that be fair and free and give peopel a chnce to choose their represntatives freely?
