Brazil elects conservative- the Right ascends

Expect the demonization of Brazil's new president along with wailing, gnashing of teeth and autistic screeching to escalate to deafcon 6 from the left as they follow their masters playbook by rote.

It's lefty tantrum time!

.............. Former army captain Jair Bolsonaro has won Brazil's presidential election, riding a wave of frustration over corruption and crime that brought a dramatic swing to the right in the world's fourth-largest democracy, official results have shown.

With 94 per cent of the ballots counted, Mr Bolsonaro had 56 per cent of the votes in the run-off election against left-wing hopeful Fernando Haddad of the Workers Party (PT), who had 44 per cent, according to the electoral authority TSE.

In celebration, Mr Bolsonaro's supporters set off fireworks on Rio de Janeiro's famous Copacabana Beach.

In Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city, car horns could be heard honking and crowds celebrated as the results came in.

Mr Bolsonaro went into Sunday (local time) the clear frontrunner after getting 46 per cent of the vote to Mr Haddad's 29 per cent in the first round of the election on October 7, which had 13 contenders.

After opinion polls in recent weeks had Mr Bolsonaro leading by as much as 18 percentage points, the race had tightened in recent days as several Brazilian heavyweights came out against Mr Bolsonaro, arguing that he was a direct risk to the country's democracy.

Mr Bolsonaro, who cast himself as a political outsider despite a 27-year career in Congress, is the latest of several leaders around the globe to gain prominence by mixing tough, often violent talk with hard-right positions.

But he is also very much a product of a perfect storm in Brazil that made his messages less marginalised.

Widespread anger at the political class amid years of corruption, an economy that had struggled to recover after a punishing recession and a surge in violence all fuelled Mr Bolsonaro's popularity. ..................
