I'm not so sure Rudd is beholden to the unions mantra, the opposition like to paint that picture but in reality the unions have no where near the power they used to have, if it suits Rudd he''ll suck to the unions, but only if he has something to gain.Rudd is beholden to the Unions and multinationals and as pointed out in a previous post by you Monk - our export mineral figures have jumped by about 30%. I don't think too many Australians want to see Australia turn into a giant quarry belonging to the Chinese and would prefer that the last of our manufacturing isn't sent overseas as it would be under the G20. If Turnbull can reinvent himself and appeal to the younger voters - he could be PM by 2013. People will catch on soon that Rudd is only out to serve himself.
I doubt Turnbull would cut our exports or drop out of the G20, in fact the Liberal party are complaining we arn't chummy enough with China now, six months ago we were too chummy, apparently.
As for Turnbull picking up Green votes, I really cant see it, most Green voters also care about social issues and I can't see the Libs selling themselves as a party that care about the issues that matter to GREENS.

Yes - I know the Liberals fall down heavily on social issues and that's a serious handicap for them. Again - it's obvious Turnbull wouldn't drop out of the G20, but it was just a thought as the Liberals are so dysfunctional at present, there could be a hope of Turnbull getting his act together.skippy wrote: I doubt Turnbull would cut our exports or drop out of the G20, in fact the Liberal party are complaining we arn't chummy enough with China now, six months ago we were too chummy, apparently.

I've just read that story about the conservative party in Britain,it was interesting but I'm not sure the success there would work for Mal.What is interesting is that while Turnbull was overseas he observed the massive, youthful Green following and he has stated publicly that it would be political suicide not to "believe" in man made global warming. It's decision time now for him as the Libs have become a squabbling mess, as to whether aligning himself with some of the Greens' policies might be the way to go
Labour has been in power a long time there and the opposition really only has to turn up on polling day to win government.
Re: I'll walk says Turnbull
Instead of funding a losing campaign for the Fibs why doesn't Malcolm spend that money starting a new party? He could forget about the LNP disaster in Qld, dickheads like Jensen, Tuckey, Bernardi etc etc. I think it is time for someone to do a Menzies. The LNP is ungovernable, has its best frontbenchers in marginal seats and what is basically deadwood, like Jensen, Tuckey, Somnolent & Peter Sleeper in the safe seats.
So set up, I dunno, the Conservative Party of Australia (or are those inappropriate initials?) attract all the younger and talented, from the parliamentary party, the branches etc. It will denounce WorstChoices, embrace climate change and the ETS and suddenly Kevy will face some real opposition--oppositions are needed to keep governments on their toes. They could avoid the looming demographic trap etc.

I think in Britain it more a case of Labour imploding under Brown than love for the Tories.skippy wrote:

It cracks me up, many on the Labour far left wanted Blair out because of Iraq even though he could deliver election victories with Britain’s middle class and they finally got their wish only to see their fortunes sink almost from Brown's first day.
Be careful what you wish for.
Re: I'll walk says Turnbull
That's not a bad idea Monk. Turnbull has the money and probably a reasonable support base outside of politics. He would at least have the freedom to lead a party the way he sees fit. That's the problem - we haven't got a decent opposition and Turnbull is basically shackled to the Liberal ideology. No doubt the thought has entered his mind.Jovial Monk wrote:Instead of funding a losing campaign for the Fibs why doesn't Malcolm spend that money starting a new party? Re: I'll walk says Turnbull
I just watched last nights 7.30 report, Kerry interviewing Turnbull.
Turnbull is ageing rapidly and I think is ill: all through the interview his pouched eyes were blinking very rapidly. I think that special Party Room meeting will be his last throw of the dice: if the Part Room doesn't back Malcolm on the ETS he will say "fuck you" and walk away from politics, from the Leadership and from Parliament. If he doesn't he will pay a terrible price with his health.
