On Friday, the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital joined a growing group of institutions offering sanctuary to refugee families.
In a statement, the hospital said it would not discharge the 12-month-old girl it was treating for burns unless a "suitable home environment is identified", as was the case with every child who presented at the hospital.
The rally heard that the child's mother was living in the hospital while her father was staying at a Brisbane detention centre and visiting daily.
Baby Asha, as she is known, was learning to walk when she grabbed a cup of boiling liquid and suffered burns that required medical attention. The parents, minority Christians from Nepal, originally arrived in Australia in October, 2013, and Asha was born in Darwin.
Rally organisers said the family was more vulnerable to be deported immediately because they were not among the families involved in the on-going High Court case, which recently saw federal government policy upheld.

Children in detention
This is an issue which is heating up. If we allow this little girl from Nauru to stay here - will those parents currently in detention hurt their children so they can come here and stay here too? Our hardline stance on refugees in detention has to come to an end soon. Turnbull knows this - but also has to tow the party line and will probably do that until he wins the next election, then they'll all be bought back here. While we're focussed on stopping the refugees, we aren't noticing the massive influx of Asians now making themselves comfortable here since the 99 year lease of Darwin Port to the Chinese. They're not only monopolising our services - they're taking away our jobs.

Re: Children in detention
I think refugee advocates should be put in detention, and their assets seized to pay the cost of us looking after everyone else's problem people.
If Donald Trump is so close to the Ruskis, why couldn't he get Vladimir Putin to put novichok in Xi Jjinping's lipstick?
