Scott Morrison ‘up for any challenge’ when asked about being Prime Minister
* by: Jennifer Rajca National Political Reporter
Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says he wont be intimidated into closing the Manus Island detention centre amid calls for him to be sacked.
HE’S already got one of the toughest jobs in the country but Immigration Minister Scott Morrison isn’t ruling out running for PM one day.
And what’s more, he’s sure voters in “The Shire” in NSW back him up when it comes to stopping the boats.
Mr Morrison, who often comes under fire in the immigration portfolio, insists voters in his electorate support the Coalition’s asylum seeker policies.
“I get so much encouragement when I walk through Cronulla mall, go down the beach, or up to Miranda Fair,” the Cook MP told The St George and Sutherland Shire Leader.
“On Australia Day we were at the fireworks at Cronulla and I was walking through the crowd and people were coming up to me to say ‘g’day’ and encourage me and congratulate me on what we had done so far, and basically saying ‘keep giving it to ‘em and don’t back down’,” he said.
When the newspaper asked if Mr Morrison ever received stony looks or the “cold shoulder” while out and about, he argued “not in The Shire”.
The minister rejected the suggestion it reinforces the view that the region, often known for the 2005 Cronulla riots, was insular, claiming constituents were not against asylum seekers but instead wanted the process to be done “the right way”.
He went on defend his own actions against critics, claiming he is not “an insecure person”.
“I believe in what I am doing, I know how I feel about these issues and what motivates me, and as a result I am not easily intimidated.”
Mr Morrison was asked about his future political ambitions and whether he could one day become Prime Minister.
“I am up for any challenge, but right now I know what the challenge is and the challenge is this job,” he told the paper.
“John Howard gave me some advice many, many years ago when I became director of the Liberal Party in NSW: ‘Do this job well, that’s all you should think about, and if you want to do anything else, then that will hinge on whether you do this job well’.
“I find those sort of comments encouraging and flattering, but I don’t dwell on them.
“I thank people for their kindness and get back to work.”
Mr Morrison, who is one of the more high profile members of the Abbott government, said he is happy to remain in charge of the Immigration portfolio as long as the Prime Minister wants him to.
His colleague Senator George Brandis was asked about Mr Morrison’s comments when he addressed the media in Sydney this morning.
“Scott Morrison is a tremendously successful minister,” the Attorney General said.
“He is one of the absolute stars of this government.”
Senator Brandis praised Mr Morrison for his efforts in putting in place new successful border protection measures, citing it’s been more than 80 days since the last boat arrival.
“It goes to show that if you’ve got a good man, or a good woman for that matter, in the job it can be done, but it took Scott Morrison and a Coalition government to do it,” he claimed.
Scott Morrison our next PM

He stops votes they will be stopped and they are stopping. Heavens we all hope that nothing happens to the Prime Minister who is such a tall glass of water that not one of these dreadful people will be put on a vote from one of our votes and sent into Muselman Land, not today. No way that will happen because he says what he does and does what he says. Not one surprise in those budgie smugglers and nothing operational there.
