Christopher Pyne’s radical shake-up in teacher training

Post by Neferti » Sat Sep 28, 2013 8:47 am

ASPIRING teachers will need to pass an interview and show off previous work to gain entry to teaching degrees in a radical training shake-up being considered by the new government.

In his first interview about schools, incoming Education Minister Christopher Pyne also said Naplan testing would be moved online as early as next year and the Commonwealth would shortly commence a review into the national curriculum.

Mr Pyne said he was in the process of establishing a short term ministerial advisory group to report early in the new year on the “priority issue” of improving teacher quality.

But his preferred option would see teaching students undertake practicum placement from the first weeks of their studies and to only gain entry to teaching degrees after showing a body of work and passing an interview.

Mr Pyne said teaching was currently a default degree for high school leavers, and that he wanted it to be considered as prestigious as top tier subjects such as the law and medicine.

This is what is planned:

PYNE’S PLAN FOR SCHOOLS

-Set up ministerial advisory group on teacher quality

-Elevate teaching to the same level as a law degree

-Put wannabe teachers through a medical school-style interview process

-Introduce compulsory literacy and numeracy tests for teaching students

-Increase the quality of teaching graduates through more prac placement

-Review the national curriculum to include more Coalition references

-Move Naplan testing online before 2016

-Scrap “league table” publishing of full Naplan results on My School site.

There are a lot of good teachers... if they have responsibility for the lesser talented pupils will they be marked down? Will teachers with more talented pupils be marked up?
Most teachers improve with experience.

I think most of it is a reasonable idea, especially this one:

Introduce compulsory literacy and numeracy tests for teaching students.

If the teachers cannot spell properly, how on earth will the students they teach learn?

Depends if it's a problem. What percentage of teaching graduates have unsuitable literacy and numeracy skills?

I have seen "homework" set by Secondary School English Teachers who appear not to know the difference between:

weather, whether, wether
there, their, they're
wear, where, were

etcetera.

If the English Teacher can't spell, why is she/he trying to teach Year 7/8 English?

Those things taught you? No wonder I could never understand you.

In any case, I support Pyne on this. Far too many pimply-faced teenagers getting into teaching courses (usually majoring in Art and PE) with limited skills only to become the kids' friend and talk to their far more older and experienced colleagues as if they are God's gift to the school. Pathetic people. This is long overdue.
