KEVIN Rudd has been thrown on the defensive on economic management after a surprise fall in full-time jobs offset by strong growth in Queensland that challenges his warnings about the damage from the state Liberal National Party government’s “austerity” cuts…
In a challenge to one of Labor’s key election strategies in Queensland, the latest figures showed the state gained 18,500 jobs and saw its unemployment rate fall from 6.3 per cent to 5.9 per cent.
Labor has attacked Queensland Premier Campbell Newman and his LNP government by claiming his cuts to 14,000 public service positions last year would damage the state economy.

Qld austerity measures have seen its unemployment go up to 6.6% and the deficit double. The same will happen federally if Abbott wins the election.

Re: QLD 'austerity' measures
Truly surprising, given the mess Anna Bligh left him to contend with.
People forget it takes time to recover from a poor government, be it state or federal.
It doesn’t happen over night, and often, the measures necessary to get things back on track appear harsh.
The difference is, Anna Blighs objective was to win votes, not get QLD back on track, whereas the LNP government knows what needs to be done and knows in order for QLD to survive long-term, the unnecessary spending had to stop.
It will take QLD some time to adjust to not being handed bonuses in the lead-up to elections (bribes) to vote for the wrong government, but in time, as their state improves they will realise which side their breads buttered on.
We are talking about a state addicted to bribes, bonuses, pre-electoral sweeteners, so they are likely to vote for whoever offers them the most, much to their longer-term detriment.
As for Anna Bligh's need to tell the world she has cancer.... Lame.
And as for premier Peter Beatties come-back.... even lamer still.

As for Anna Bligh... she was given the hospital pass by the smiling assassin Beattie.
