Labor mulls boot camp for young job seekers

Young job seekers would be forced into tough army-style boot camps to qualify for the dole, under an election policy being considered by the Rudd government.

The Youth Start Boot Camp was tabled as a future election policy in a submission that has been leaked to Fairfax Media. It was put to the Labor government's powerful expenditure review committee by ministers Bill Shorten and Kate Ellis in May.

Senior government sources said the army-style camps - which are designed to impose strict disciplinary regimes - remained on the table as an election policy for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

The idea was framed as a possible vote winner for the government and was slated to be announced before August 15, if accepted.

It's not a bad policy, although not all unemployed young people will appreciate it. It sounds a bit like a conscription of sorts though. They'll come in handy as cannon fodder eventually especially with the escalation of US troops gathering here. Pine Gap is already being used as a base for the yanks to send their drones over to indiscriminately bomb Pakistan - so there's another war in the planning.

China has criticised the American plan, which includes deploying thousands of US marines in Australia's Northern Territory. The US has said it will assign 60% of the navy's fleet to the Pacific Ocean by 2020. Currently the navy divides its roughly 285 ships equally between the Atlantic and Pacific.

Australia will have to end its complicity in US drone attacks on civilians in Pakistan or face war crime accusations at the International Criminal Court, according to a Pakistani lawyer and rights campaigner.

Shahzad Akbar said Australia would face immediate scrutiny of its involvement in the ''targeted killings'' by drone missiles via the Pine Gap spy base in central Australia, revealed by Fairfax Media on Sunday.

Why would you think that the US isn't planning another war? They're not over here for the fun of it - or maybe they are? They live for war. I'm sure the government and opposition know about it, but we'll be the last to find out. Why would Rudd want to put our young people in boot camps?
