Libs attack Labor's fire record

Post by mellie » Mon Mar 11, 2013 10:28 am

PREMIER Lara Giddings has defended her Government's record on fire prevention after being accused of ignoring advice to commit more than $27.5 million to increase fuel reduction burns.

But Ms Giddings has admitted to receiving the advice and deferring the decision.

Opposition leader Will Hodgman used the first two questions in Parliament this morning to ask Ms Giddings whether she had received the advice from government officials following the Royal Commission into Victorian bushfires.

Ms Giddings said a request was made in 2010 from then-premier David Bartlett for a list of recommendations from the Victorian Commission to determine the best ways to avoid devastating bush fires in the future.

She said 48 of 67 recommendations had been accepted and the majority of other recommendations accepted in principle.

However, Ms Giddings did confirm she had received advice on fuel reduction burns in March last year but Cabinet deferred their decision.

Ms Giddings accused the Opposition of politicising the issue of Tasmanian bush fires.
