Schools forced into praising the government ceremonies as election approaches
Written by CanDo Editor on 25 January 2013.

In a bizarre programme which is redolent more of an authoritarian country or even a dictatorship, schools with recently finished BER ( Building the Education Revolution) buildings will be required to hold election year "recognition ceremonies" during this election year. They are to praise the government and invite federal Employment Minister Bill Shorten to speak, according to a report by Gemma Jones in the Sydney Daily Telegraph on 24 January 2013.

This $16.2 billion program, administered by the then Minister of Education Julia Gillard, led to a scandalous waste of money particularly in a number of public schools. An enquiry was established without the power to compel witnesses to appear, to protect them or for the production of documents. That found that the waste involved extended to well over $1 billion. The Australian and radio station 2 GB’s Ray Hadley concluded that the waste point to several billion dollars. This included the provision of buildings not asked for and the tearing down of buildings and their replacement by buildings of lesser use. In at least one case, a building was completed in a school which was soon to be closed.

Ms Jones reported that an online kit sent to schools advises teachers they are to make "provision in the official proceedings for the Minister Bill Shorten or his representative to speak" at ceremonies which are not to be planned for parliamentary sitting days. The kit can be seen at http://deewr.gov.au/ber-recognition-ceremony-kitBER" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Recognition Ceremony Kit

Students can only be asked to speak "where possible and where time permits".Schools are directed to "acknowledge the government's assistance in all speeches and publicity issued by the school such as newsletters, websites or local media articles".

Staff are also told they are to "record the day through photographs or video footage" and publish the material on the school website and to provide parking for guests, with a government plaque to be fixed to the building.

Ceremonies have taken place for several years based on the same guidelines. The government has been criticised for continuing them in an election year.

The ceremonies could take place at more than 1000 schools, with about 13 per cent still to host the recognition events the Department of Education says are "required."

Why not? The Government is copping the criticism for it.....what is wrong with promoting the obvious benefits of those buildings, and acknowledging the fact that it was an ALP Government which made the decision to construct them?

The election has been called... SEPTEMBER 14

Why call it when the date is months and months away?

For whatever Gillard has given away a key advantage, the element of surprise. The ironic thing is... September 14 is the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur - the day of atonement.

I think we all know for whom the bell will be tolling.
