Reading between the lines of Labor's education bill

IN its words and deeds, the federal Labor government behaves like it did in opposition. If you ask the Minister for Schools, Peter Garrett, what he thinks of Australia's school funding system, he will tell you it is failing our young people. He will say it is broken. He will refer to a decade of neglect.

Never mind that Labor has been in government for five long years and student outcomes have declined. And never mind that Labor state governments have had direct control over the management of public education for the best part of the past decade in every Australian state.

Australians shouldn't forget that Labor was elected in 2007 promising nothing less than an "Education Revolution".

Julia Gillard acknowledges her governments education failures... well, it's not like she can deny them is it. 8-)

"Then the other thing I've got a really big focus on is delivering on further education reforms.

"We had a fair old wake up call in international testing (recently). We can make sure our kids can get a world-class education."

An iconic Labor government 'Education Devolution' strike back?

8-)

On a brighter note, Australian Jewish schools have been performing better than ever before, thanks to the generous funding they've received from our federal and state governments.

At the end of the day, the rest of our nations schools don't really matter at all.

That one I'll give you. It never ceases to amaze me how both major political parties feel the need to bow down to the jewish community. I'm a public school teacher and proud of it but do you have any idea of the fight we have had to have to get funding to buy new text books to implement the Australian curriculum for next year? That's right, the Year 8 Australian curriculum begins in a month's time and we are still fighting for new text book funding. If I bang my head against this wall anymore, I think I'll knock it down.

At least text book funding is available. My kids went to school during the Howard regime and their text books were hand me downs from private schools - tattered and worn, one book shared amongst 2.

Even when I went to school all children were issued with brand new books, but then again classrooms didn't have airconditioning or heaters, nor were they expected. Maybe comfort has taken precedence over education or else the budget is in serious decline.

The budget is healthy but too much is used on pointless bureacracy. I once went to the DECS main office in the Adelaide CBD and, let me tell you, not even the most prestigious private school could match that level of comfort.
