Abbott identifies $50 billion in savings

Post by mantra » Sun Oct 07, 2012 12:53 pm

$50 billion? If Abbott becomes next PM - where is he going to make these savings? Most services will have to be cut to the bone. We're already seeing state funded health and education services reduced drastically under coalition premiers. Those people on struggle street and bearing the brunt of these reductions aren't happy.

It can't be done humanely and Abbott knows this. Will he have the guts to explain where these cuts are going to be made?
OPPOSITION Leader Tony Abbott says the coalition will find savings of around $50 billion to fund its election commitments, including a generous paid parental leave scheme.

Labor has repeatedly accused the coalition of having a $70 billion budget black hole but on Sunday Mr Abbott insisted "we will fully fund all of our promises".

"Before the last election we identified $50 billion worth of savings," the Liberal leader told Network Ten.

"We have a similar task before the coming election. We will rise to this task as we always have."

Mr Abbott accepted it was a big challenge but said the coalition was up to it.

He said the Gillard government was spending like a drunken sailor.

Labor has promised to deliver a national disability insurance scheme, an education funding overhaul and a new dental program in recent months alone.

"It's making tens- if not hundreds-of-billions of dollars worth of unfunded commitments," Mr Abbott said on Sunday.

"The government is a bit like the tenant trashing the house before it gets evicted."

Well getting rid of the Climate Change Commission and cutting back the NBN will go a long way towards it. Improving productivity by getting off the backs of many businesses and cutting red tape will increase tax revenues and also help. The parental leave scheme is paid for by a levy on some businesses. Cutting the baby bonus would also help. A proper audit and reprioritisation of funding would also help. Not giving away billions on overseas bribes for the UN Security position would also help as would stopping the people smugglers. The end of war in Afghanistan will also help. The list goes on and on mantra.

Or just do what Swan did with the NBN, keep the expenditure going but simply exclude it from the budget.

Many things will have to be cut to the bone and who is to blame for that?

As for the Coalition premiers. NSW has been under the thumb of Labor premiers for what? 15 years? They screwed NSW to the wall and then they scurried out the door leaving a huge black hole that the Libs have to fix. Damn shame NO money was left to help those on struggle street

Whether you consider them humane or not the simple fact is that cuts will have to be made. Same thing applies. The cycle goes on. Labor spend spend spend and leave us with a deficit and a huge hole and the Libs have to spend the next 10 years repairing the damage, which they always manage to do

The ALP is spending and spending like a drunken sailor. Just like a tenant that knows that they are about to be evicted so they trash the house.

Australia's economy is going down the gurgler, and on top of that Gillard and Swan are borrowing money just to give out handouts to buy votes.
It was a total embarrasment to see Gillard lecturing Greece on economics, and then Swan lecturing the USA on economics.

Good on Gillard trying to get Australia to be just like Greece!
