Catch 22 had a view of war I am sure influenced the movie and then a very popular TV show with the simular cynical theme, one I love MASH.
Now I think MASH is funny but damaging to democratic will power.
It has an undercurrent of moral relativity that can eat away the democratic world’s will to surive.
In particular in the last years of the series there were many speeches by Hawkeye about how futile the entire enterprise was, a moral relativity between the North who invaded and what the UN forces were trying to do. All generals were portrayed as heartless buffoons (the exact opposite of the General who turned that war around Ridgeway, who as a man deeply concerned about his men but knowing victory had to be achieved); there was a certain lack of understanding about the reality of that war that comedy demands.
Which reminds me, I love the North Korean version of MASH….SMASH.
Sadly it only went one episode, Kimeye makes a smart remark about the Great Leader and has a bullet put through his head in the opening scene, meanwhile Kimdar is sent off to a hard labor camp for having eye glasses, which indicates he reads and is a threat to the state, with the ending of Kimgler being tortured in front of the entire camp for providing them with enough food to survive.
The credits had one name.
Kim Il Jung.
