He's talking about the conventional phase of the war, in which Iraq's army and air force were defeated. That wasn't literallly 12 minutes, but a few weeks.

The subsequent guerilla/terrorist/factional struggle took about seven years to settle.

In retrospect, the defeat of Iraq's armies was the short and easy part of that war. Occupying and pacifying the land, and establishing a democratic government, was the long and hard part.

Ultimately it was successful, but at far greater cost than anyone had anticipated.

However, the current issue is a possible conflict between Israel and Iran. If Israel wins, it has neither the resources nor the desire to rebuild its enemy.

What do you mean retrospect? Well know military strategists and politicians were harping on about exit strategy on the front pages well before the war began. We already had Afghanistan as an example.

Until the US pulls out, it is too early to call it a anything. It could turn into a functioning democracy. It could turn into a seething mess of hatred that starts WWIII by attacking Iran or the US.
