Would you jump in NOW and make the change?
1. If so why?
2. If not why not?
3. If so, which make/model do you think is reliable and price competitive?
Background info : Our 2 older kids are pushing for an electric car (in all honesty they do need a car to share btwn themselves) but we don’t believe it’s a good idea. Yet. We think the technology needs to improve and that’s why the govt is incentivising new purchases ie to help push stock through until technology improves.

2. If not why not?
I have investigated this.
I have decided I will be a late adopter of this new tech.
Reasons:
1. I need a 100% reliable car and will stick with petrol for the next few years
2. I just got a new car that consumes 1/2 the petrol.
3. They are expensive cars
4. I cannot wait for recharges when travelling, petrol fill it in a couple of minutes, pay and be moving again.
5. I find it purchases by people who see cars as some sort of status symbol, I don't care for that shite
I will re-evaluate my position in 4-5 years or when it becomes more economic and that have addressed the shortcomings of the tech and recharging.
I do have say, the Tesla is seriously impressive and if I was rich, I may have one as a second car.

Re: Electric Cars
Thank you Super Nova. I appreciate your feedback on this. You have essentially confirmed what I myself was more or less thinking.
I just didn’t feel right about proceeding in the direction of getting a brand new electric car. Our neighbours are all getting them and I suspect it’s due to the status symbol attached to such vehicles (rather than any environmental concern). I don’t particularly care for status symbols. In fact I tend to associate status symbols with deep seated insecurity and low self worth.
For me it’s always been safety over status. And I don’t think electric cars are all that safe. Would I be right??

My understanding is you are sitting on a big chemical brick and what can happen in an accident can be extremely unpleasant.lisa jones wrote: ↑Fri Jul 28, 2023 7:26 pmFor me it’s always been safety over status. And I don’t think electric cars are all that safe. Would I be right??
By they appear to be no more dangerous than driving around with a tank of inflammable fuel I suspect.
Good article on it.

Are EVs any more dangerous than a regular petrol or diesel-powered car in a crash?
No current data shows that EVs are more likely to catch fire in a crash, but the dangers are clear.
Batteries damaged in a crash or by object impacts can lead to a fire, and a number of incidents around the world have shown that the worst case scenario outcomes are not pretty.
Once the flammable electrolytes in a Li-ion battery are alight, it is incredibly difficult to fully extinguish the fire in a high heating process called thermal runaway.
Batteries are not only full of flammable materials and harmful chemicals, but their massive contained energy is also capable of restarting a fire many times over, even after it appears to be completely out.
But, vehicle and battery manufacturers are continuously developing and improving their products in a quest to ensure maximum safety and durability, regardless of the conditions.

Re: Electric Cars
Why would you buy a car that burns before you crash it?
So far lithium bombs (EVs) have sunk 2 car carrying ships.
In the near future EVs will be uninsurable, and body corporates will ban EVs from their car parks lest it burn their concrete building down ..... Think concrete doesn't burn? .. technically it doesn't, but subject to extreme heat, it explodes!.
Internal combustion engines running on hydrogen are the future of motor transport.
Storage issues? .. Bullshit! .. A= Kevlar. Production issues? .. Bullshit! A=1.7 volts - you could do it in your back yard with a solar panel.
Cummins build truck and heavy vehicle engines ... out with diesel, in with hydrogen.
Toyota has a prototype engine ready for production that converts water into hydrogen.
An EV has 7000 lithium batteries. Even though the EV industry is metaphorically Gomez Adams' train-set (will prematurely crash and burn) this dud industry is an environmental disaster for no good reason.

If Donald Trump is so close to the Ruskis, why couldn't he get Vladimir Putin to put novichok in Xi Jjinping's lipstick?

They’re also too expensive to insure because they’re so easily written off even in minor accidents.Outlaw Yogi wrote: ↑Thu Nov 23, 2023 12:29 amWhy would you buy a car that burns before you crash it?

We’re currently looking at buying a new car but we’ll wait til the end of December. I can negotiate better under end of yr sale conditions esp if it’s around 24 hrs away from a new year. It will be a small Merc for my daughter (she’s got a model in mind she reckons ... we’ll see).
NB : STAY AWAY FROM BMW’s - unless you quite enjoy throwing money in the garbage bin.
